Recruited or rejected: Automation may power future recruitment

While multiple tools exist to simplify the recruitment process, none exist to automate decision-making until AEDTs came into the picture. Automated Employment Decision Tools (AEDTs) are computer-based systems utilising machine learning, statistical modelling, data analytics, or artificial intelligence to assist or replace human decision-making in employment-related processes.

These tools can significantly impact various aspects of employment, including hiring, screening, promotions, and other workplace efficiencies.

The use of AEDTs has increased due to their potential to streamline the recruitment process, enhance objectivity in candidate evaluation, and improve workplace productivity.

Flipping to the other side of the coin, companies should not be handing over the decision-making power to AEDT yet. AEDT deployment has also raised concerns regarding bias, fairness, and transparency. As per Local Law 144, within one year of using an AEDT, employers and employment agencies must ensure that an independent third party conducts a bias audit of the AEDT.

Fake or Deepfake? A growing concern

A study by the Centre for Countering Digital Hate highlights the alarming rise of political deepfakes facilitated by easily accessible AI tools and inadequate social media moderation. These AI-generated disinformation campaigns, mainly targeting elections, have significantly increased, threatening democratic processes worldwide. The study underscores the urgent need for improved safeguards and moderation to combat the spread of such misleading content.

How should you remain protected?

  • Verify video source - Not all videos from WhatsApp are trustworthy.
  • Check for manipulation signs - Look for inconsistencies, such as unnatural movements, mismatched audio.
  • Conduct reverse image search - Use image search tools like Google Images or TinEye to check if the content was repurposed from existing images.
  • Report suspected deepfakes - Report such videos to the platform where you found it and to relevant authorities if necessary.
